Spare Keys - Home Safety Tips

28 July, 2010

Ever have one of those days where nearly everything goes wrong, and then the last thing you need to go wrong at the end of a long day also goes wrong? Had one of those days just last week, and it involved my house key, and it made me think about an important home safety tips.

I had car trouble quite a ways from home, which resulted in my car needing to be towed and me calling a family member for a ride home. It was a long, tiring day and I was in no mood for what happened next. I'd left all my keys with the mechanic, house key included.

I was locked out of my own house, a place I very badly needed to be inside, and was ready to actually break a small window to get inside. As I stood there contemplating my move, I remembered that some months back I'd taken a spare house key to a neighbor I'd known for many years. I chose them, an older couple, because they seemed to always be home, which they were.

It was a valuable home security lesson that day, and one I'll never forget. I knew not to keep a house key under a doormat, but I still wanted one easily accessible. It really paid off for me that day. My house is protected by ADT alarm monitoring, but not hiding a key anywhere on my property is me doing my part to keep my house and family even more secure.

Wireless home security means no more breaking though drywall, and searching for source of electricity, and in general making a mess of your finished house. Wireless home security means placing the home security components where you want without all those worries.

You get a wireless touchpad, which you'll use to monitor your system, as well as to arm and disarm the system. You'll also get wireless door and window sensors, which will generate an alarm whenever a door or window is opened but should be closed. You'll also get a motion detector armed with Pet Immunity, which means it's smart enough to tell the difference between your family pet and an intruder.

Finally, you'll get a wireless keychain remote which will give you the ability to arm and disarm your system at the push of a single button. You can also use it to send a panic alert to the monitoring company.

Helping Your Neighbor With Home Security

26 July, 2010

The other day my neighbor across the street was out doing a little yard work, so I stopped over to see if I could lend a hand. What I found out was he was preparing to install some exterior security lights and a couple of wireless security cameras.

My first question to him was whether his house had recently be burglarized. I was pretty sure I'd know if it had, but I wanted to make sure. He said not his, but his sister's house across town had been broken into while they were gone for the weekend, and that event caused him to want to take some action in his own yard.

We talked about the various home security measures that can easily be undertaken by homeowners, and I also got to share with him the many things my wife and I had done around our house. I also told him that we rely on ADT to monitor our security system around the clock protection and how that would have definitely helped prevent the burglar at his sister's house.

At the end of the project, my neighbor told me that a monitored burglar alarm system sounded like a solid investment and he was going to make arrangements to have one professionally installed as soon as possible. We decided then and there that the more home in our neighborhood that were professionally protected the safer we'd all be in our little community.

Increase Home Security With A Lighted Pathway

21 July, 2010

I recently purchased some inexpensive solar lights to illuminate some pathways around my yard. The first night I saw them lighting the way, I wondered why I hadn't done this years ago. Coming home late at night no longer had to be an obstacle course, hoping a trike, skate, or baseball wasn't in my way, just waiting to take out an ankle.

I also saw that these lights were taking away some potential hiding spots that burglars love so much. Individually, these lights aren't that bright. Collectively, however, they serve to light the immediate area, which I discovered was enough to be effective on two fronts.

This summer we've taken care of a lot of potential security problems with our yard, and this is just one more step in our overall security plan. It's easy to underestimate the importance of exterior lighting, trimmed shrubs and bushes, and lighted pathways. Sadly, it's the burglars who count on homeowners who don't care about these things. They quickly become targets.

Protect your home with ADT home security, and do what you can around your yard to make your security equipment even more effective. Let burglars know they've chosen the wrong house.

Safety First When Returning Home

25 June, 2010

When I lived in Germany, I discovered that men actually don't hold the doors for women. This has nothing to do with the lack of chivalry. In fact, it's quite the opposite.

German men, when entering a building, will walk ahead of their wife and children in case danger lurks on the other side of the doorway. It's a carryover from earlier days, but it's something I never forgot and the practice is now part of our home security routine.

When we return late at night, I have made it a practice to go ahead of my wife and young son and open our house to make certain I'm not bringing them into a dangerous situation. For us, this feels like the right thing to do, so we do it. This also gives my wife time to gather up our son and everything we bring along for his comfort. By the time I've make a check of the house, she's ready for me to come back outside to help getting us all back in, safe and sound.

We rely on our monitored ADT alarm system to protect our house and our belongings, and have chosen to be aware of any other security measures to bolster the effectiveness of our home security system. Remember, doing something is better than doing nothing when it comes to home security.
