An ounce of prevention - unplug appliances when away from home

26 August, 2009

Alarm companies like to warn us to unplug certain appliances when they're not in use to prevent fire, but in many cases it's just common sense.

Perhaps one of the greatest culprits is the curling iron. Often left on the edge of the sink, it can easily fall into the garbage can or against a roll of toilet tissue. Irons are another obvious example, as are toasters. If you're leaving your house for an extended period, it's best to unplug as many things as possible to prevent to possibility of electrical fire. But don't unplug your wireless alarm because A) you need you're home security system while you're gone, and B) it's a wireless alarm, it doesn't even have a plug.

Also, I would NOT recommend unplugging your refrigerator.
