Monroe and its sister city West Monroe—known as the Twin Cities—are located on the banks of the Ouachita River. The cities are named after the paddle-wheel boat James Monroe, which had a major impact on the area's economy and culture. Monroe has hosted the annual Miss Louisiana pageant for the last fifty-five years; the pageant is held every June. In Southern Monroe, the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo is home to more than 500 animals and makes for an awesome day trip—let your little ones (or yourself if you're feeling like a kid at heart) fawn over impalas, ocelots, and peacocks, as you enjoy a slush puppy from the Flaming Flamingo.

Another of the city's claims to historical fame lies in the Biedenharn Museum and Gardens, the former estate of Joseph A. Biedenharn, who was the first successful bottler of Coca-Cola—before his method, the drink was only available from soda fountains. Biedenharn also founded Delta Airlines, and it was headquartered in Monroe until it outgrew the city.
