Most Burglarized U.S. Cities Per Capita

The heat map displays each state’s most burglarized city from greatest (dark red) to least (light red). [Click to expand]

According to FBI data, over 1.5 million burglaries were reported across the United States in 2015. Hopefully, yours wasn’t among the households burgled that year, but your chances of experiencing a break-in might depend on where you live. For instance, life in Springville, Utah is relatively burglary-free. The state capital, Salt Lake City—only 40 minutes away? Not so much.

Below, we’ve assembled a list of the most burglary-prone cities in each state per capita, along with a list of the top ten most-burgled cities per capita in the United States. To rank each city, we looked at the FBI’s 2015 statistics—the most recent year data was available—and divided the number of burglaries by city population, then multiplied by 10,000 to get the per capita burglary rate.

How To Secure Your Home From Burglars

While moving to a safer neighborhood can decrease your chances of burglary, you shouldn’t have to uproot your entire life just to protect yourself from crime. Take a look at the advice below to tip the scales in your favor when it comes to dodging crime.

Lock Your Doors

Most burglars sneak in through your front or back door. Deadbolts offer maximum security, but sturdy locks won’t help you if you don’t use them.

Stay Light and Bright

Thieves flourish in darkness. Keep your property well-lit inside and out with motion-detecting lights, lamp timers, and more.

Seem at Home When You’re Away

Have a neighbor mow your lawn and gather the mail when you’re on vacation. Never advertise your absence on social media.

Invest in Great Security

Alarm systems and motion sensors keep burglars off your property and give you greater peace of mind. Cameras can help police track criminals if they scurry away with your possessions.

Don’t Advertise Belongings

Got a new TV? Don’t leave the packaging on the curbside. Break down the boxes and store them inside until trash day.
